Learning to Wait for Light
And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Genesis 1 : 2–3 (ASV 1901)
Before God spoke light, Scripture gives us a glimpse of the world as it was: waste, void, and covered in darkness. No shape. No structure. No life. Just emptiness and obscurity.
Yet even in the darkness, the Spirit of God was moving. Hovering over the waters with wisdom and intention. Present with purpose.
Nothing was visible but the darkness of the deep, but God was already at work. Nothing was formed, just water, but God was already preparing as He hovered. Nothing was illuminated, but God was already near.
God is active even when everything looks empty. His Spirit moves long before His voice is even heard. And then, into the darkness, into the confusion, into the formless void, God speaks. "Let there be light" ... and there was light.
Light did not rise from the chaos. Light did not emerge from the waters. Light did not come from creation. Light came from the Creator. This was His first act of mercy, His first revelation, His first step toward order.
Genesis 1:2–3 reveals a divine pattern that still governs the life of every believer still today.
God sees the chaos.
God moves in the chaos.
God speaks into the chaos.
God brings light to the chaos.
Then, God begins to form and fill.
Light comes before labor.
Revelation comes before responsibility.
Clarity comes before calling.
God does not ask you to build in the dark.
He does not expect you to walk without sight.
He does not call you to obey without His light.
Just as creation could not flourish until light appeared, your spiritual life cannot flourish until God shines His light on it.
Light is revelation. It reveals what is real. It exposes what is harmful. It highlights what is holy. It shows the difference between what is good and what only looks good.
When God says, Let there be light, He is lighting up the straight an narrow path for all creation to obey. He is awakening the soul.
The Spirit moved before the light came. This means God is working in places you cannot yet see. He is preparing what you cannot yet understand. He is arranging what you cannot yet discern. Your darkness is not evidence of His absence. Your emptiness is not proof of His distance. Your confusion is not a sign that He has forgotten you. The Spirit moves in the unseen. He hovers over the unformed. He breathes over the broken. And when the time is right, He speaks light into what once felt hopeless.
We often rush to act before we see. We plan our next steps, relationships, and futures without waiting for God’s clarity. We move on impulse instead of God's light to light the way. We build without blueprint. We run without direction. We work without revelation.
We must remember one thing at every crossroad, Light comes before labor!
Before we made decisions we must act in wisdom. God did not create in darkness; He created in perfect clarity above it.
As you open your bible today to study the words of Genesis 1:2-3, remember that walking worthy of your calling means learning this discipline:
Wait for revelation before action.
Refuse to move until His Word lights the way.
Trust God in all things and in every circumstance.
Trust that obedience begins with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, not urgency.
Waiting for light is not delay. It is devotion. It is worship. It is surrender. It is trust.
It is saying, “God, I will not move until You speak.”
When light appeared, God saw that it was good. Obedience always reveals goodness.
When you walk in the light of His Word, your life begins to reflect His glory. You see clearly. You love purely. You serve faithfully. You discern wisely. You walk confidently.
Darkness loses its grip because truth has taken its place.
The light shining in you is proof that His Word is active. It is evidence that His Spirit still moves. It is confirmation that His presence still transforms. And when you obey the light of God in you, it will be your testimony!
Father, shine Your light on my path before I take a single step. Reveal what is hidden, correct what is crooked, and guide what is uncertain. Teach me to wait for Your Word before I work, and to walk only where Your light leads. Move in the places I cannot see and speak light into the places I cannot fix. Let Your presence prepare me and let Your Word direct me. Amen.
